Maui Realtor Laura McDaniel feels she has finally gotten her life on an even keel after a divorce and the disappearance of her teenage daughter Annie. When her favorite customers want to purchase a glamorous property that is For Sale By Owner, Laura's instincts warn her this will be the most difficult sale of her real estate career...and she's right. When Annie abruptly returns to Maui, distraught and pregnant, Laura faces the daunting possibility of raising her grandchild alone while trying to succeed in an all-consuming profession. Paying the Price vividly illustrates the daily life of a Realtor in Hawaii. Add a heaping helping of mother-daughter conflict, plus a quirky seller and bossy buyers, and the sum is a lively read on an armchair trip to the Valley Isle. The author was raised in Honolulu and raised her children on Maui, where she was a licensed Realtor and real estate instructor for many years. She wrote it as she lived it the good, the bad, and the zany. The Island setting creates a compelling sub-texture without overwhelming the story. Paying the Price received the coveted Honolulu Advertiser's Ka Palapala Po'okela Reader's Choice Award from the Hawaii Book Publishers Association in 2006 and an Award of Merit from the Colorado Independent Publishers Association in 2005.

Took me through a host of emotions and the scene at the airport almost made me cry. Also, who would've thought that the guy in the garage of the house was... that revelation stunned me for about 10 minutes!!!!

I'm a lawyer-real estate broker from the Philippines and aside from the great story which will keep you awake for several hours. I learned a lot from this book, things you will only learn through experience and in the field (and you won't read about in how-to books or in seminars on how to be a successful in real estate selling), she discusses with great detail, insight and wisdom in the book.

She is to realtors what John Grisham is to lawyers. I also purchased the sequel of this book, and would write a review on that as well. It's certainly about time someone wrote about realtors in a positive light, to show the diligence and hard work each of these professionals put into every purchase that happens.

Because of this book, I also now look forward to visiting Hawaii!!!!

I hope she continues to write more books like this.

Paying the Price eBook Madge Walls Reviews

I was in Hawaii almost 40 years ago and have not had the opportunity to return...until last week, when I read Madge Walls' "Paying the Price." It was amazing...I could smell the ocean air, hear the regional speech patterns, and taste the delicious fruit beverages all over again! Madge captures the essence of Hawaii, educates the reader about the nuts and bolts of life as a Realtor, and draws us in with a compelling story about family drama and predatory relationships. Her protagonist is a very real person with very real personal demons who nevertheless remains true to her friends and clients. She has some hard choices to make, and we agonize along with her as she struggles to come to terms with difficult clients and even more difficult family members. This is truly a "couldn't put it down" experience. You won't find a cheaper flight to the islands!
As a Maui resident, retired Realtor and mother of 3, this book told a story that was delightful, suspenseful and tenderly gripping. Ms Walls is a wordsmith who crafts her characters and story line with well chosen words to paint a picture of the scenes. Turning the pages, I drove down the old Mokulele highway with its wiliwili trees feeling the psychedelic flash of sunlight on my face; smelled the Haiku countryside after the rain and listened to the crash of the waves. It brought back so many memories of my island as it was 20 years ago! The former Realtor in me felt the anxiety and pain of keeping a transaction together and doing it without violating any of the fine points of ethics and the mother in me ached for Laura as she struggled to rebuild a relationship with her daughter.
This book is a page turner full of suspense, frustration, anguish and tenderness; it's not to be missed!.
I recently learned that Madge Walls has a new book out called Buyers are Liars and immediately had to buy it. But since I'm here I thought I'd leave a review on Paying the Price. It's been YEARS since I've read this book but the plot, the characters and the emotion that Madge Walls evokes in this book are unforgettable. In my opinion, you cannot be a woman and not put yourself in Wall's protagonist's (Laura) place. She's divorced, trying to recover when the daughter she thought she might never see again shows up on Laura's doorstep pregnant. Overjoyed but dealing with a girl with serious issues, Laura nevertheless must make a living and Walls takes us through the Aloha State as she tries to close one deal after the other. Loaded with twist and turns, Paying the Price is a fabulous read.
Good book., kept my interest
Loved the subject matter! The characters and situations were very real! Great vacation read! Looking forward to many more in this series!
Being a Realtor in real life, this book was too much like being at work. Never really like any of the character. Only finished reading it because it was book club pick
I have not had an opportunity to visit our 50th state, and after seeing it through the eyes of someone who grew up there, I'm more anxious than ever to make the trip. But the strength of "Paying the Price" is neither the location nor the protagonist's occupation as a realtor. Two stories coexist—a difficult family drama and a bizarre house sale—both of which Walls populates with complex and utterly human characters facing difficult choices and making surprising decisions. If you're in the market for a page-turner, you've found it.
